Saxapahaw General Store

After planning my sorority’s fall semi-formal at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, NC (about 25 min. from Elon), I became acquainted with the old cotton mill town. The event space, which functions as a coffee shop by day and music venue by night, blew me away. Located alongside the Haw River, it delivers a vintage-inspired feel while maintaining a traditional, country charm.

I was excited when my friend Bonnie invited me to see her brother-in-law play a show there the night before our event. He is a drummer for the band, Megafaun. Opening for the blues-inspired, folk rock band were the Bowerbirds. Now before you finish reading this post, you must check out their music. It’s phenomenal.

You’re probably wondering what this post has to do with food. As if Saxapahaw wasn’t already an exciting surprise, some friends and I decided to dine at the town’s acclaimed restaurant, the Saxapahaw General Store. It’s not just a restaurant trying to be a general store — it actually is one! Locals buy their groceries, gather, and most importantly, eat here.

You walk into what looks like a rustic mini-market only to find a kitchen, booths and a chalkboard menu featuring the day/night’s specials. The restaurant prides itself on using only local and seasonally-produced ingredients.

My eyes were fixated on the Indian vegetarian curry special with a mango chutney. Little did I know  that my plate could have fed an army! The dish didn’t disappoint and oddly became the perfect late-night, post-concert snack.

My friend Scott ordered the goat burger with duck fat fries. Yes, duck fat. Sounds gross and ridiculously tempting at the same time, right? These hashbrowns were so delightful, I forgot what they were fried in. Both items got a well-deserved thumbs up!

You can’t pass up the restaurant’s remarkable collection of specialty beers. I didn’t particularly love my Indian Pale Ale, but hey, you live and you learn.

Cheering specialty beers !

Overall, the Saxapahaw General Store is worth trekking to for a delicious meal and hipster-Southern dining experience. Whether you check out a show at the Haw River Ballroom or stop by for drinks at the Eddy Pub afterward, it’s the perfect, out-of-the-ordinary adventure with a group of friends.
